How do you decide between Gastric Sleeve and Gastric Bypass?

The choice between Gastric sleeve and Gastric bypass depends on different individual factors, such as health status, the person’s preferences and in the end it is the medical team who decides what is best for your unique situation.

Both surgeries lead to long-term weight loss in most people, but both have risks associated with them, as with any surgery.

Which Safer, Gastric sleeve or Bypass?

As we have seen in previous posts, all surgeries carry risks, but there are those that present fewer risks compared to other weight loss surgery procedures.

In a study of over 65,000 weight loss surgery patients, sleeve gastrectomy, or gastric sleeve gastrectomy, was shown to have the lowest risk of all.

The study demonstrates the following:

According to the National Library of Medicine(NIH) a study of more than 65,000 people compared the effectiveness of different types of bariatric surgery.

The results determined that Gastric sleeve surgery was the safest procedure with the lowest risk of side effects during the 30 days afterwards, with a side effect rate of 2.6% and bypass surgery was associated with the highest risk at 5%.

Gastric banding, meanwhile, is associated with lower risks than bypass with a 2.9% risk after 30 days.

“Overall, they are extremely safe operations.” The risk of all complications is 3% after sleeve gastrectomy versus 5% with gastric bypass.
